Breaking: Coup attempt in Maldives by Opposition, police

This is sad. I do not think much of President Mohammed Nasheed's global warming antics like conducting an underwater cabinet meeting. But President Mohammed Nasheed represents liberalization, the hope of the youth in the country. Met him briefly when he was opposition leader and campaigning for presidentship of the country. I had then evaluating a Tsunami programme of the Red Cross. A NGO leader I was contact with said I must meet him as he was the hope of the country. If these reports are true, then this is a black day for democracy.

Male: The Maldives is undergoing a coup attempt led by Opposition demonstrators and rogue elements of the police. According to reports, the demonstrators have taken over the state broadcaster.

There are also widespread rumours that President Mohammed Nasheed has resigned following ultimatums from the Opposition.

However, the office of the president has denied that Mohammed Nasheed, the first democratically elected president of Maldives, has resigned.

He won the elections in 2008 following 30 years of dictatorship in the island nation.P resident Nasheed, however, remains in control of the army.
