Cyclone Thane: Tidal waves damage boats

The sea was very rough all along the coast in Nellore and Prakasam districts. Fishermen of the coastal habitations of Ramalinga-puram and Chinnramudu-palem alleged that their catamarans and boats which were kept close to the sea were damaged because of tidal waves on Wednesday. Except for rough conditions in the Bay of Bengal, the weather remained as usual with a clear sky here on Wednesday.

Special officers moved to their respective mandal headquarters and are monitoring the cyclone situation.

The district collector, Mr B. Sreedhar, conducted a review using wireless sets with officials of 13 coastal mandals from Doravari-sathram.

He told them to instruct all village secretaries and other field staff to stay in their places of work and alert fishermen and general public about the impending cyclone.

According to authorities, rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is likely to commence over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Thursday under the influence of Thane cyclone.

As per an IMD communiqué, received by the district authorities, the cyclonic storm Thane over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary, intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centered at 14-30 hrs IST on Wednesday about 500 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu).

It is likely to move west-northwestwards, intensify further during the next 24 hrs and cross north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Cuddalore and Srihari-kota, close to the south of Chennai around the morning of December 30.

However, as the cyclonic storm will come further close to the coast on Thursday evening, there is a probability of slight weakening before landfall.

As a result, the intensity of rainfall will increase with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall (25cm or more) from Thursday evening onwards in south coastal AP. It may extend to Rayalaseema and north interior Tamil Nadu. Squally wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kms are likely to hit south coastal AP, north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts from Thursday morning.
